Spindle Bed-Queen

R 29,095.00

The Houtlander Spindle Bed, a wooden bed with simple, elegant lines in the Shaker tradition.

We have considered every detail, foremost in our minds in this design was to create a platform bed with a detachable headboard that would never loosen with daily use or over time.

  • The Solid Oak Frame is as sturdy as can be with perfect joinery, designed never to fail or move in the slightest.
  • The legs are permanently joined, with a spilt and wedged round tenon joint, there is no possibility of them ever working loose.
  • The detachable headboard is attached into a perfectly cut dovetail and fixed there with 8 Allen Cap screws. The spindles are perfectly toleranced to ensure permanent bonding.
  • The baseboard is made with European Birch Plywood with slots cut through to ensure proper airflow through the mattress above
  • A single leg in the middle means it will never sag

As with all our products, this bed is constructed in highly durable, sustainably harvested, American White Oak. Made to last as long as the timeless style it has been designed with endures.

Available in 4 Finishes.

We’ve all slept in beds that creak and sag, so we understand why you might look at our spindle back bed and succumb to scepticism. Spindles are spindly, after all, and that’s a word which suggests frailty. In this case, however, you can throw the duvet over your worries and forget about them.

Our bed is the strong, silent type, and there are a few good reasons for that. First, it’s made from solid oak and relies on machined joints that fit perfectly, every time. The legs are attached with our signature wedged tenon and simply cannot work loose. The detachable headboard is first secured in a dovetail, then fixed with eight screws.

The pièce de resistance is a single leg in the middle of the bed, under the European birch plywood baseboard, which makes sagging impossible. (The baseboard, by the way, is slotted to ensure proper airflow through the mattress it supports.)

So much for functionality; now, have you seen how beautiful this bed looks, with its Shaker-style minimalist design and subtle curves? We make it in five widths ranging from single to king, each of which can be supplied in extra-length.

And of course, you can choose one of our four finishes to match the decor in your boudoir. It all adds up to one of the most important things in life: a beautiful, solid night’s sleep.

Our Oak:

We only use sustainably harvested American oak to craft our furniture. Timber is an inherently sustainable material - trees are (ideally) an infinitely renewable resource. But many manufacturers rely on monocropped pine, or other woods, due to cost and ease. This practice destroys soil and the surrounding ecosystem. All our oak is grown and harvested in indigenous forests on the east coast of America. Trees are felled only once they’ve reached full maturity. Then they are drawn from the forest in minimally invasive ways that preserve the surrounding vegetation. It’s all about delivering a truly sustainable and stunning product.

Manufacturing Process:

Carpentry and joinery are two of the oldest crafts on earth, and furniture making ordinarily requires a huge amount of skill in order to deliver truly exceptional results. Unfortunately, these traditions are largely dying off, particularly in the global South, making great wooden furniture hard to come by at reasonable prices. At Houtlander we want as many people as possible to have access to beautiful, well-crafted furniture which lasts a lifetime. This is why we’ve combined expert craftsmanship with 5-axis CNC technology, allowing us to create perfect curves, joints and furniture features in an affordable and replicable way.

Our Grounding Pillars

Crafted

All our furniture is exceptionally well crafted. By marrying traditional techniques with 5-axis CNC technology, we’re able to create an end product which bears all the marks of a hand-crafted piece, with none of the imperfections or hefty price tags.

Our Grounding Pillars

Considered

We believe in taking time within the creation process and working with nature to create harmonious design in every sense of the word. We don’t just want our furniture to look good, but to work effortlessly and leave a legacy, providing people with a sense of comfort and purpose. From perfectly curved seats to smoothly sliding cupboards, unwavering bed frames and tables that won’t wobble. Everything we create is well-considered and environmentally conscious.

Our Grounding Pillars

Timeless

We design all our furniture using classic silhouettes and noble materials, drawing from Scandinavian and Japanese traditions but adding contemporary twists. We believe furniture should last lifetimes and create a positive environmental effect, leaving a legacy for future generations. All our pieces will sit comfortably in any space, forever.

The Team

A Woodworking Home

Providing apprenticeships in our blend of 5 axis CNC and handcrafted techniques allows us to employ people who would otherwise have no entry point to the carpentry trade.

We hardly ever see staff leave and make a fervent effort to assist those who are struggling – frequently hiring from a nearby mentally handicapped facility and assisting the team wherever we can.

We take participation and transformation within our direct community seriously, and we believe you can feel that in the quality and energy of the end product.
